Golden Anniversary: Connecting Humanity Through Music

The 26th IKS Symposium will take place on July 31 - August 4, 2023 at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, California, USA. The Symposium is a bi-annual international event, serving as a platform to educate, engage, support and foster connections for aspiring and experienced music educators, ethnomusicologists and musicians internationally.

The sub-themes for this Symposium are:

  • Connecting Body, Mind, Soul and Music
    Healing power of music - Artistry & sensitivity in music-making.

  • Connecting Roots and Heritage to Our Present Communities Through Music
    Sessions & workshops will include the László Vikár Folk Music Research Forum.

  • Connecting the Application of Kodály's Ideas and Principles
    Celebrating the elements of Kodály’s philosophy that include his work as a composer, educator, philosopher, ethno-musicologist, performer, conductor, innovator and linguist.

  • Connecting Teachers and Students
    Understanding who we teach and what we are learning from them. Responsiveness in teaching - exploration, assessment, interpersonal relationships and observation.

  • Connecting IKS: Past, Present and Future of the Kodály Movement
    Honoring and celebrating those who came before us and nurturing future leaders.

General Submission Guidelines

We are pleased to invite IKS members from around the world to submit proposals for papers, workshops, and performances, which will be presented at the 26th International Kodály Symposium from July 31 - August 4, 2023 in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Important dates:

  • Submissions will be accepted October 1 - December 19, 2022 through the Symposium website.
    Late submissions will not be accepted.
    Updated December 1, 2022.

  • Proposal acceptance notification will be sent by January 14, 2023.

Submission Checklist:

  • All submissions must be made by IKS Members. If you do not hold a current IKS member, register or renew here.

  • Please provide two references who are knowledgeable of your research and presentations.

  • Presenters and Performers are responsible for their Symposium registration and all related travel and accommodation expenses.

Types of Submissions:

  1. Paper Submission (30 mins)

  2. Workshop Submission (45 mins)

  3. Performance Submission (up to 45 mins)

Proposal Parameters:

  • IKS Members may submit multiple submissions. The Symposium Program Committee reserves the right to limit the number of presentations accepted for any one individual.

  • Proposal submissions must be in English.

  • Presentations may be delivered in a language of the presenter’s mother tongue with English translation provided by the presenter.

  • Submission proposals will be evaluated on specific criteria in each type of proposal.

  • Joint presentations will be allowed. One presenter will be the point of contact.

  • Facility Descriptions:

    • Seating 70-100 people per room (fewer allowing for movement activities)

    • Wireless audio/visual connectivity

    • Piano
